bbos-50-preview-crackberryWith BlackBerry Messenger 5.0 finally released, the next big release most serious BlackBerry users are looking forward to is the new BlackBerry 5.0 OS update. Peter at BGR has reported that many BlackBerry users could see the new OS as soon as this week; and Verizon’s BlackBerry Storm customers could have the new OS as soon as Sunday, Oct 25th or Monday, Oct 26th.  Addtional release dates will depend on your wireless carrier and BlackBerry device.  So will your berry support the new update?

Mauricio, over at BlackBerryRocks, found out from RIM knowledge Base which BlackBerry devices will get the new OS upgrade.

The list of supported devices are:

  • BlackBerry® Pearlâ„¢ Flip 8200 series smartphones
  • BlackBerry® Curveâ„¢ 8330 smartphones
  • BlackBerry® Curveâ„¢ 8350i smartphones
  • BlackBerry® Curveâ„¢ 8900 smartphones
  • BlackBerry® Boldâ„¢ 9000 smartphones
  • BlackBerry® Stormâ„¢ 9500 series smartphones
  • BlackBerry® Tourâ„¢ 9630 smartphones
  •

Ouch, it looks like BlackBerry 8100, 8310, and 8320 users just missed the cut.  Even with that said, your BlackBerry will still get the job done just fine and will still support most apps as long as you have upgraded your BlackBerry Software to OS verison 4.5. Those who can update will need to have at least 64 MB of application memory to upgrade.

The best way to update your BlackBerry will be using either BlackBerry Desktop Manager for PC or Mac. This way you can backup your BlackBerry before you upgrade, so take the time now to install it on your computer.

    Thanks Mauricio & Peter
