Yesterday was quite a day for T-Mobile and it’s customers. T-Mobile joined the other three major carriers who’ve experienced nationwide outages in the last 12 months.  T-Mobile’s wireless network suffered a massive voice and data outage that spread across the U.S. like wildfire. Around 6:30 p.m. EST,  reports started coming in regarding fast busy signals and failed SMS ( text) messages. While most other users were cut off from the world. Many T-Mobile BlackBerry users were still able to sporadically use BlackBerry Messenger, Pin to Pin, and even Twitter updates to communicate.   However, by early this morning T-Mobile reported that full service had been restored.

UPDATE 11/03/2009  10:25 PM PST:

T-Mobile confirms it has fully restored voice and text/picture messaging services for customers affected by intermittent service disruptions on Tuesday.  About five percent of our customers across various geographies were affected for much of Tuesday evening, and by late Tuesday PST their service was restored.  Our sole focus has been restoring full services for all customers; we are now investigating the root cause of the incident.  We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience that this has caused our customers.

Many T-Mobile subscribers who use Google Voice as there primary contact number was able to do the following:

  • Redirect calls to work, home, or another cell phone.
  • Make calls from any phone via the web interface or by dailing into their Google Voice account.
  • Check all voicemails and send texts from their Google Voice account online.
  • Do it ALL seamlessly without anyone  knowing they were not using there regular phone.

      Those using BlackBerry devices on T-Mobile’s UMA, like my family, weren’t affected either.
