BlackBerry FAQ: Why is my BlackBerry Deleting Call logs and Messages, and How do I Fix it?

Nov 18, 2009 No Comments by Anderson Curry

So for what seems like no reason as all, your beloved BlackBerry suddenly begins to delete call logs, emails, and text messages, and is running just plain slow.. Is there something wrong with my BlackBerry???  The answers is no… Your BlackBerry is running out of memory and just needs to make some breathing room.  BlackBerry’s with only 64mb of memory on board seem to be the most affected by this problem.  This would include BlackBerry 8100 series, 8300, 8310, 8320 and slightly older BlackBerry devices.

One way to improve performance is to upgrade your BlackBerry to one of the newer, more current devices. Most of the newer BlackBerry models have more memory, and support its operations in a much more efficient way. If you would like to review the best pricing for a new BlackBerry from your wireless carrier click here to visit our online BlackBerry Store.

If you can’t upgrade or you love your current Berry, then continue reading and lets make your Berry happy again.

One of the initial things you most likely will need to do is purchase a MicroSD card for your BlackBerry.  A MicroSD card will only provide additional storage on your BlackBerry for pictures, music, and videos. A MicroSD card will NOT add additional memory to your phone for applications, themes, or messages. Before you purchase an MicroSD card, be sure you get one that is compatible with your BlackBerry’s current operating system.

OS Max SD Size
4.2.0 2 GB
4.2.1 / 4.2.2 4 GB
4.3.0 / 4.5.0 8 GB
4.5.0.81 16 GB
4.6.0 to 5.0. 32 GB

Here are a few ways  to increase the free memory on your BlackBerry.

One of the best ways to free up memory on your device is to delete any applications that you do not use.  Everyday we seem to discover a new BlackBerry app to download, unfortunately if your BlackBerry doesn’t have a lot of on board memory. All those apps can really slow down your device. To remove unused apps do the following.  From your BlackBerry home screen press the Menu key, find options, then go to > Advanced Options > Applications

Free Up Memory!

  • Select the unused app and press the Menu key.  Then select Delete.
  • Reboot the device.
  • If you choose to delete anything, your device will restart and yield a higher File Free.

Enable Content Compression: Go to Options > Security and enabled Content Compression, this will free up some space.

Set Keep Appointments to 15 Days: This won’t make a major difference but will definitely free up some space.

Delete the “Help” Application: Once you get the hang of your BlackBerry you don’t really need this app. Go to Options –> Applications, select Help and delete it.

Delete the Sample Video: Go to Options > Advanced Options > Applications.  Highlight BlackBerry Sample Video, press Menu and Delete.

Delete Pictures: Delete any unwanted images from your BlackBerry’s memory or move them to your MicroSD card. I have found that a lot of pictures on the BlackBerry, instead of the MicroSD card, is one of the biggest robbers of your device’s precious memory.

Clean Up Browser Cookies and Cache: If you have been using your BlackBerry browser for Google, Facebook, or any other kind of web usage. Just like your desktop computer, your BlackBerry will store cookies, content, and history. So take a moment to clean up your browser..

Start the mobile browser.  Press the Menu key and select Options > Cache Operations.  Clear History & Clear Cookies.

Free Up Memory

Reduce Allocated Media Memory: Start the Media App.  Press the Menu key.  Change the Device Memory Limit to 12mb.

Free Up Memory

Set Keep Messages for a max of 30 days: All those emails, text messages, and picture messages take up A LOT of space, so limit the amount of time they stay on your BlackBerry. Click the Messages icon.  Press the Menu key and select Options.  Select General Options.  Scroll to Keep Messages and lower the value.

Free Up Memory

Clear your event log: From your BlackBerry main screen, hold down the alt key and type LGLG. This will bring up your devices event log, so just hit the menu key and delete.

Change Call Log Options: Click the Phone icon.  Press the Menu key.  Select Options > Call Logging.  Change to None (or Missed Calls if you prefer).

Delete old Texts, Emails, and Picture Messages. Deleting old messages will save a lot of space and prevent your BlackBerry from slowing down. Try saving pictures from your picture messages or emails to your SD card so you can delete the message. You could also forward it to your email address.

Limit Your Themes:Everyone loves to download a good BlackBerry theme, but too many can take up a lot of space. Try not to have more than one or two and delete that rest. Be Sure not to delete the original themes that came with your BlackBerry.

Hopefully these little gems will help get your BlackBerry back on its feet. If you know of anything I may have missed, please feel free to share with the rest of the BBDreamBlog family.
