AT&T agrees to give Unlock Codes for all mobile devices, but this announcement does have a catch.

new-att-logo2 We have just received some info that due to a settlement in a class action lawsuit , AT&T has agreed to start providing  unlock codes to pre-paid & post-paid customers as long as some specific criteria are met. If you are a pre-paid AT&T customer, you must provide proof of purchase from an authorized AT&T dealer or AT&T direct store to get your device unlocked. EBay, or other third parties may not be acceptable. For post-paid subscribers (customers who signed a contract), you must have your account in good standing and have “completed a minimum of 90 days of active service.”  Now, that sounds pretty good right? Well hear comes that catch…

According to the settlement agreement, “Any device that AT&T has an exclusive sales arrangement with a manufacturer of less than 10 months will have to wait until the 10-month period expires before they can receive an unlocking code.”  So if you buy the new IPhone 4G or the hot new BlackBerry Bold 9800 Touch Slider, you will have to wait 10 months or better before you can get that unlock code. On the other hand, if you have a BlackBerry 9700, and since T-Mobile also carries this device, the ten month rule may not apply to you.  If you are able to unlock the 9700 you may be able to sell that puppy to get yourself the new 9800…. just a thought. Also keep in mind that our sister site, BlackBerryDreamShop.com offers BlackBerry unlocks for as low as $13.99. Why wait?
