A few months ago we posted a rumored list of BlackBerry devices that might be getting the BlackBerry 6 upgrade. RIM has finally announced what current BlackBerry models will be getting the BlackBerry OS 6 update in the following statement.

BlackBerry 6 is scheduled to be first introduced to the market with the BlackBerry Torch on August 12, but I know many of you are also wondering about support for existing BlackBerry smartphones. I am happy to report that BlackBerry 6 will be available in the months ahead (pending carrier certifications) on some of our leading smartphones, including the BlackBerry® Pearl™ 3G 9100, BlackBerry® Bold™ 9650 and BlackBerry® Bold™ 9700.

Part of the reason only these select devices will be getting the BlackBerry 6 update, is because BlackBerry 6 requires at least 512Mb of flash memory to run. Currently only the 9100, 9650, and 9700 have 512Mb of memory on board. If you are thinking, couldn’t I just add an SD card for more memory. Sorry it really does not work like that, SD Cards really only support your Media and documents files at this time. RIM is working on allowing you to store and run apps from your SD card, but that is still in development.

So if you are on AT&T or T-Mobile you will need to have the BlackBerry 9700 to get BlackBerry 6. If you are on Verizon or Sprint, then the BlackBerry 9650 will be getting the update. If you are in the market for a new BlackBerry Smartphone and want to get a 9700 or a 9650.
